How to Open Young Coconuts at Home? Opening young coconuts is not only a “man’s job.” Any woman can do it easily, and I can show you how!
Fresh coconut water is the favorite drink when I go back to Thailand. I have to make sure to drink a lot of it, as It’s so refreshing and always makes me feel good.
Oh, how I wanted to be able to drink it at home in the US!
For years, I dreamed about having fresh coconut water instead of canned, but it never happened. No matter how much I wanted, I wasn’t able to. Opening young coconut was just too intimidating
As I love drinking coconut water so much, I bought packs and packs of it canned. One day, when I didn’t feel good about having so many cans to recycle anymore, I thought about drinking it from fresh coconut again.
Since young-fresh coconuts are not difficult to find nowadays and we can get them in most grocery stores, I gave it another try!
That time, I bought a fresh coconut and tried opening it. I carefully used a small serrated knife to shave of the white pulp, and used a small clean axe’s sharp edge to cut it.
It was a little bit awkward but I did it, and I used that method for a while before I exchanged the axe for a cleaver. Using a cleaver to open it is so much easier and I can do it more often now.
However, I have to admit it’s not easy or cheap. Fresh-young coconuts are more expensive than canned. That fact makes me wonder how can they sell it so cheap–I still don’t know!
Ever since I learned how to open young coconuts at home, we stopped buying any canned coconut water. When we really want to drink it, we buy fresh-young coconuts and open them on our own.
