If you use coconut milk often and are tired of dealing with its containers, or not comfortable with the BPA in the container linings, why don’t make your own? It’s also tastier & healthier. Homemade Coconut Milk is SO easy to make!
I grew up eating Homemade Coconut Milk because most Thai dishes have coconut milk as part of the main ingredients. From curry dishes such as green curry, to dessert–you name it.
We usually made a fresh batch of it right before we used it in our cooking, and there was no canned coconut milk to compare it with.
Living in the US, it’s not easy to do the same as living in Thailand. As premade coconut milk is so easy to find everywhere nowadays, I got into the habit of buying it for a long time.
I finally got tired of dealing with the packages and cans though. Most of all, I grew seriously uncomfortable with the BPA used for the can linings. Even though there are some brands claiming their cans are BPA free, that makes me wonder even more. What do they use instead then? If the material is really safe for food, buying it still creates a lot of container waste. So, I decided that making my own Homemade Coconut Milk is the way I would like it.
In order for it to be easy enough to make it on regular basis, I use dried coconut flakes instead. It’s not the best as from scratch, but still better than canned.
I have experimented making it both light and thick, but finally I’m happy with this recipe. Its perfect for drinking and cooking, and the flavor is incredibly tasty.
With all these good reasons, I don’t think I can buy another can of coconut milk again.

- Combine cold and hot water to make it lukewarm in a blender container.
- Add the coconut flakes, mix and soak it for a few minutes.
- Blend it on high speed until thicken and smooth.
- Transfer it into the nut milk bag in a bowl.
- Squeeze the milk as much as you can, and discard the coconut pulp. Sometimes, I dehydrate it and turn it to coconut flour, but as I make it so often, I just compost it most of the time.
- Pour the milk into a glass jar, and keep it in the fridge for later. You can drink or use it for your recipes.
